Религиозный и мистический опыт включает в себя различные переживания, в том числе ощущение единения с высшими силами или встречи с невидимыми существами. Показано, что при этом оказываются задействованы различные нейронные структуры и механизмы центральной нервной системы, но чаще всего изменения наблюдаются в теменной части головного мозга. Оказалось, что при уменьшении активности в нижней теменной дольке (lobulus parietalis inferior), которая отвечает за создание чувства контроля над своей собственной волей, может возникать иллюзия присутствия постороннего всемогущего существа. Кроме того, стимуляция нижней теменной дольки приводит к уменьшению религиозности. Кроме того, она содержит моторные и зеркальные нейроны, помогающие человеку понять намерения других людей по их движениям. Таким образом, снижение активности теменной доли, скорее всего, способствует «встрече» со сверхъестественным.
Исследователи соглашаются, что религиозных опыт участников эксперимента нельзя назвать репрезентативным для всех остальных – для этого требуется более обширное исследование с большим количеством участников из более разнообразных слоев общества. Но в то же время ученые говорят, что их исследование дает новый взгляд на то, как внутри нашего мозга формируются чувства одухотворенности. Совершенствуя «наше эмпирическое понимание того, как наш мозг формирует чувство духовности», пишут ученые, мы сможем «облегчить разумную интеграцию религиозных способов в методы лечения и профилактики нашего душевного здоровья».
